Simon Virley
Simon is a Vice Chair at KPMG and leads the Energy and Natural Resources practice. He has over 30 years’ experience advising on energy and climate issues in senior roles in both the public and private sectors. Since joining KPMG from the UK Government in 2015, Simon has advised a wide range of international investors on strategy, regulation and deals in the UK energy market and abroad, focussing on the Energy Transition and the path to Net Zero.

- Senior advisor to National Grid on the build out of energy infrastructure (2023-current);- Expert advice to the CEOs of all the Gas Networks on the role of hydrogen in the transition to Net Zero (2019-current);
- Senior advisor to the PM’s Business Council on accelerating local green energy infrastructure projects (2022-23);
- Advice to the GB System Operator on options for Future Power Market reform (2021-22);- Advice to National Grid on the establishment of a Distribution System Operator (2023-current);- Senior advisor to the Sustainable Homes and Buildings Coalition (Natwest, British Gas, Worcester Bosch and Shelter) (2021-23);
- Launched landmark report at COP26 with CEO of SSE on ‘Lessons from UK journey on decarbonisation’ (2021)
- Advice to UKPN CEO on strategy and approach to ED2 price control (2019 – 2022);
- Strategic advice to the CEO of The Crown Estate on their marine strategy (2021-22);- Market and regulatory advice to the Octopus Energy CEO on the £1bn+ deal with Origin Energy (2019-20) and subsequent transactions;
- Lead financial advisor to Hitachi/Horizon on £20bn new nuclear investment in the UK (2015-19);- Helping Orsted secure a government contract in 2017 to build the 1.2GW Hornsea 1 project, then the world’s largest offshore wind farm;
- Advice to a number of governments on future power market design issues including Japan, Australia and Poland.
