Steve Fletcher

Professor Steve Fletcher is Co-Director of the Revolution Plastics Institute at the University of Portsmouth, leading interdisciplinary research to end plastic pollution and drive sustainable systems change. His work connects plastic pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change, producing evidence that informs policy and practice. He has published more than 120 peer-reviewed papers and major reports for the United Nations, World Bank and G20, and is founding Editor-in-Chief of Cambridge Prisms: Plastics. He has contributed to global agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Paris Agreement, and participated in high-level forums such as the Global Environment Facility Council and the UN Environment Assembly. He is a member of the UN International Resource Panel. In the UK, he was appointed by NERC and Innovate UK to shape a research and innovation agenda aligned with the emerging Global Plastics Treaty, working closely with Defra and national stakeholders. Steve combines scientific leadership with public engagement, translating complex evidence into clear, policy-relevant insights to advance effective action on plastics and sustainability.
