Sebastian Dunnett

Senior Programme Officer, Nature Economy , UNEP-WCMC

Dr Sebastian Dunnett is a nature scientist and intergovernmental expert specialising in biodiversity and the energy transition. He works at UNEP-WCMC, the specialist biodiversity centre of the UN, helping businesses manage biodiversity risk in decarbonising power systems.

Published in PNAS, his research found that predicted wind and solar expansion has minimal overlap with the world's most important conservation areas. At UNEP-WCMC he led the update to the global Critical Habitat Screening Layer, used by infrastructure developers to meet IFC PS6 biodiversity safeguards, and worked with the Proteus Partnership to transfer biodiversity knowledge from extractive industries to energy transition companies.

His work spans the energy value chain, from critical mineral mining to renewable energy development. He contributed as a Fellow to the IPBES Nexus Assessment — the most comprehensive global scientific review of linkages between biodiversity, water, food, health and climate.

He holds a PhD in renewable energy and biodiversity from the University of Southampton and has spoken at Chatham House, industry associations and academic conferences.
