Marcus Stewart - Green Grids Initiative (GGI)

Marcus Stewart

Head of Secretariat, Green Grids Initiative (GGI)
Marcus has a wealth of experience in energy and energy networks having worked in industry and government focussing on both domestic and international grids.

He leads GGI, launched by the UK Prime Minister at COP 26, which is tasked with accelerating grid deployment globally to enable the transition to renewable energy and increase energy access. He was seconded from National Energy System Operator (NESO) initially into UK Government to run GGI and now directly into the Secretariat. Under his leadership it has developed into a standalone organisation with a global ecosystem of partners across governments, multilateral agencies, academia and business to work on the technical, financial and political challenges to high renewable grids and cross border interconnection.

Prior to joining GGI, he held senior positions at NESO and National Grid. Spending over two decades covering electricity transmission, interconnectors, and gas networks. Most notably he led the work on National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios and Capacity Market Analysis, producing long term energy scenarios that underpin the GB energy industry’s market and network planning. Working closely with industry stakeholders and government, he played a key role in predicting and shaping the GB energy landscape for many years.
