How to Scale Up Carbon Negative Biofuels and SAF
Whilst some sectors can decarbonise by moving to electric power, other harder-to-abate markets such as aviation and marine will need to continue to use liquid fuels, so the challenge is how to grow the supply of non-fossil based low carbon fuels. This is where new production technologies will allow us to tap into abundant feedstocks - such as biomass residues to make advanced biofuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and green hydrogen to make e-fuels/e-SAF.
Nova Pangaea has developed its own proprietary technology to convert biomass residues into carbon negative bioethanol for SAF, along with biochar as a co-product – which is also a form of permanent carbon capture or removal. This means the SAF made using bioethanol from Nova Pangaea’s process has a significantly negative Carbon Intensity.
Nova Pangaea is backed by IAG/British Airways, has proven the technology at its demonstration plant in Teesside, England, and is kicking off a Series A fund raising round to progress the detailed engineering design required for final investment decision on its first of four plants planned to supply SAF to British Airways, in collaboration with LanzaJet.
The aviation sector needs to scale up the supply of SAF – deploying technologies such as Nova Pangaea’s are key to meeting this need, reducing net emissions and also providing more security of supply by diversifying the feedstocks used, as well as reducing price volatility.
