This presentation explores the challenges of managing embodied carbon throughout the construction project lifecycle and examines how digital tools can support more effective carbon monitoring and decision-making.

It considers the limitations of traditional whole-life carbon assessments, which are often undertaken at key design stages but can become disconnected from project outcomes as procurement decisions, product substitutions and construction activities evolve. The presentation discusses the importance of maintaining up-to-date carbon data and improving
visibility across design, procurement, construction and operational phases.

Using CarbonCentric as an example, the presentation demonstrates how a centralised data platform can enable project teams to track embodied carbon in real time, validate material selections, assess the impact of design and procurement changes and maintain a live record of carbon performance throughout delivery.

The presentation also examines the wider benefits of continuous carbon management, including improved portfolio-level reporting, greater transparency of material and product
data and the development of digital material passports to support future asset management and circular economy objectives.

Finally, it explores the role of data analytics and artificial intelligence in automating reporting processes, identifying carbon hotspots, benchmarking performance and providing insights that can inform decision-making across projects and portfolios. The presentation highlights how integrated digital approaches can support the delivery of lower-carbon construction outcomes while improving the quality and accessibility of carbon-related information.
