All Together Now – building hopeful narratives with people and place to accelerate action: In conversation with The British Academy and Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership
In conversation with The British Academy and Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership
In our current highly polarised social and political context, coming together to centre people and place in approaches – whilst strengthening democratic processes through increased connection - can unlock and accelerate progress for both net zero and nature.
Over the course of 3 years, The British Academy has been exploring how engagement, governance and delivery approaches can benefit people and place. The Academy is now collaborating and connecting with existing agendas to accelerate action.
In 2020, Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership established the Community Climate & Nature Action Project to support communities to lead their own response to the climate and nature crises, building on existing local priorities and narratives of place to develop plans and priorities for the future. Now 5 years on this project has engaged over 18,000 local people in climate action, in the majority of cases (between 50-70%) for the first time.
Approaches with a people-centred focus are often set against or deprioritised in favour of technocratic approaches. Whilst technology is important and needs to be part of the solution – it becomes clear quickly that without local buy in and support, these will ultimately fail.
Join Alexandra Paz (Senior Policy Advisor on Public Policy for The British Academy) and Lizzi Testani (Chief Executive Office of Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership) for in conversation to explore the findings from The British Academy’s research and Bristol Climate & Nature Partnership’s place-based practice and its implications for climate and nature action policy and governance.
