Tree Equity in the UK

24 Jun 2025
Cities Hub & Bar
Sector: Cities, Communities & Nature

An introduction to the Tree Equity Score UK which measures disparities in urban tree cover in all main UK towns and cities. The score covers 35,000 neighbourhoods, home to around 50m people. It has been developed by the Woodland Trust, Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and American Forests, based on work in the US. The Tree Equity Score uses a new tree canopy cover dataset provided by Google which is combined with data from the census and indices of multiple deprivation. Data on heatwaves and air pollution is then also used to identify the places most in need of increased tree cover. The talk will introduce this work, the early adopters, new research and a new UK programme being developed by the Woodland Trust  - Trees For All - to target tree planting in the communities most in need.
