Carbon Mastery: Pioneering Retrofit Solutions for a Net Zero 2050

25 Jun 2025
Cities Hub & Bar
Sector: Cities, Communities & Nature

Achieving net zero by 2050 requires a nearly threefold increase in retrofitting rates. Real estate owners, landlords, investors, and industrial clients must act swiftly to avoid financial penalties and workforce shortages. The absence of a clear retrofit pathway and conflicting performance targets often lead to decision paralysis. This talk will unveil opportunities to streamline retrofit decision-making by enhancing the understanding of the interplay between whole life carbon/energy, costs, and programme. Case studies from 2022 to 2024 highlight diverse approaches based on clients' carbon fluency and organisational maturity. The digital Retrofit 'North Star' solution has proven successful in unlocking decision-making, contributing to over 500,000 tCO2e in client carbon savings over 15 years.

We will explore retrofit risks, opportunities, and interdependencies, emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of the work. Case studies demonstrate that deep retrofit can save over 50% of energy demand and carbon emissions, with nearly half of the savings coming from low-cost optimisation measures alone.
