Pete Brotherton

Director of Science, Natural England

Pete has responsibility for Natural England’s 200 scientific specialists and is NE’s lead Director for Climate Change. He has a particular interest in the interface between conservation science, policy and practice. A former academic, with field experience in Southern Africa, Borneo, Europe and the UK, his previous roles at Natural England have included Species Recovery Manager, Head of Biodiversity and Deputy Chief Scientist. Pete has published widely and is an experienced presenter to audiences ranging from COP26 to local groups. He was scientific advisor on the England Biodiversity Strategy, Biodiversity 2020, led the secretariat of the influential Lawton review and was lead author of Nature Positive 2030, a joint publication of the UK statutory nature agencies. He has championed and led significant innovations in UK conservation, including approaches to nature recovery networks and the introduction of eDNA techniques.
